This is a great podcast. I especially liked Scott's prediction of a virtual nation. It seems like it'd be an interesting direction to go.

The self-entitlement issue that came up in the "downfall of America" side of the discussion struck pretty close to home for me. I think a lot of it has to do with a lack of motivation on the part of the individual; after all, if a person feels that they're not going to get anything for their hard work, it becomes difficult for them to do that work. I think the trick is to teach people how to find the value in doing the work so that, even if things go badly, they'll still walk away from the situation with something of value.

Interesting thoughts on the sense of entitlement in fandom. I am frequently astonished by the blind arrogance of this.

    Great podcast.

One thought to add on virtual nations. John Adams once said, "I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."

I'd put virtual lives in the last cluster of Adams' statement. The basics of life will need to be secure before the virtual aspects can advance. Just my thoughts.

Also, I like the short segments. I don't ,ind the break-up of the session. It makes the files & listening times more manageable and is still quite enjoyable.
